Stage fright is a serious problem for many students of music as well as professional musicians, one that can significantly affect performance and cause anguish and stress. The interlinked factors which govern the intensity of the effect of stage fright on performance include self-image, perceived self-efficiency, the level of preparedness on the repertoire and amount of experience performing. This monograph explains stage fright in its diverse manifestations, describes its psychological, social and educational factors, and provides an analysis of methods of preventing stage fright in school. The research section examines whether self-efficiency and self-image can be predictors of stage fright in students of music who come from three different educational systems and establish possible differences between them. It further strives to gain more profound information about this causality and to determine whether the differences can be attributed to different educational experience of students. It also analyzes implications of this study for teachers and students of instrumental music education.
